This guide is still being written, things may not be quite finished!

This tutorial will guide you through setting up the DreamNet VPN on your desired system and how to join the AD domain.

Note

It is suggested to first read through the FAQ to answer any questions you may have.

Introduction

There are a few things you should know before following this guide.

• The computer you are using to connect to DreamNet should either be a VM or a secondary machine. Do not connect your main computer to DreamNet.
• It is possible to migrate your existing user profile to your new domain account. There will instructions on how to do this later in this guide.

Connecting to the VPN

Windows

1. Download SoftEther VPN Client

   Note

   If you are using a modern browser, pick the top download link as it is from GitHub and downloads much faster.
   

   I get an error message when trying to run the file!

   If you get a message like this. You need to save the file first, then run it directly.

2. Run the downloaded file

3. Click through the setup until it is finished installing, the defaults are fine.

4. Open the SoftEther VPN Client Manager.

5. At the top of the window, pick Virtual Adapter Adapter -> New Virtual Adapter. Continue with the default options.

6. Now that you have created the Virtual Network Adapter, double click on Add VPN Connection and copy the configuration as shown below. Once everything matches the below example, click OK.

7. Set the VPN as a startup connection

   Caution

   If you do not do this, you will not be able to connect to the VPN before logon, which can cause issues logging into your domain account.
   

8. Finally, you can double click the VPN connection to connect. If you get a warning about the certificate, click Resume the Connection then choose Yes. The digest should match the below screenshot.

Joining the Domain

Now that you have connected to the VPN and set it as a startup connection. You can join your system to the domain.

Windows

1. Open sysdm.cpl from the Run box.
2. Click the Change button in the Computer Name tab.
3. In the newly opened dialog box, click Domain: in the Member of section and put in dreamnet.corp, and press OK.
4. You should now see a popup asking for credentials. Enter your domain credentials and click OK.
5. If everything has gone correctly, you should see a popup that says “Welcome to the dreamnet.corp domain.”
6. You will now be prompted to restart the computer, click OK, OK, then Yes to restart the computer.
7. After the computer restarts, log back into your local admin account, open cmd and run net localgroup Administrators /add DREAMNET\yourdomainuser to add your domain user to the Local Administrators group. This is required to install software and such.
8. Optional: Migrate existing local user profile

   1. Download and run ProfWiz
   2. On the Select a User Profile step, select the local profile you wish to migrate, check Disable Account, then click next.

      Tip

      Your local account does not need to have the same username as your new domain account.
      
   3. You will now be asked for your User Account Information. Enter your domain username and click Next.
   4. If everything has gone correctly, you should see something like this. You can now click Next, then Finish.

      Note

      If the process fails, restart the computer and try again.
      
   5. Restart the computer to finalize the process
9. You should now be able to log into your new domain account!

   Note

   When logging in, be sure you are signing in with your domain account. You can confirm this by clicking Options on the login screen and seeing that it says “Log on to: DREAMNET”
10. The final step you should complete, is to change your domain password. You can do this after logging in, by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del and clicking Change Password

    Note

    Make sure you also update the password in the properties of your SoftEther VPN connection!

    Instructions

    1. Open the SoftEther VPN Client Manager, right click the DreamNet VPN connection, and choose Properties.
    2. Update the pasword in the User Authentication Setting section
